5 Things I am Thankful for + His & Her Thanksgiving Style

Family Pic 1Family Pic 3Family Pic 11Family Pic 10When I sat down to write this post, I totally felt like I was back in 1st grade with a Thanksgiving worksheet but I sort of loved it! It’s amazing to just sit down and think about just how many amazing things I have in my life right now. I promised I wanted to get more personal with you all so here it is!

What I am thankful for:

  1. My beautiful and mighty God who constantly blesses my life in more ways than I can even realize.
  2. My family. I have the most amazing family in the entire world. I have blessed that my parents double as my best friends. They are patient, kind, and show me more love then I could ever imagine yet they are fun and outgoing. Not a day goes by that I am not extremely thankful to have them in my life. I am also incredibly grateful to have the best-extended family. They have turned into the best friends and role models I could ever ask for.
  3. Russel. There are no words to describe what this man means to me! He is one of the best gifts God could ever give me. I am so thankful he puts up with my competitiveness, my talkativeness, and yes even my nosiness when we eat out at restaurants 😉 In my defense, some people have the oddest convos haha.
  4. My pup – Bree. That little fur ball can put the absolute biggest smile on my face! She has so much personality and it is so fun to watch.
  5. My friends and you all! You all are truly inspiring and keep me going! I am grateful to my friends who encourage me and push me outside of my comfort zone and to you all who uplift me and keep my little corner of the internet going.

His + Her Thanksgiving Style

MeRuss & I 14Russ & I 6Russ & 9

My look: Scarf // Jeans // Boots // Sweater (Old – Similar linked – On Sale $19.99)

R’s look: Boots // Black Jeans // Button Down // Jacket

Now for a little Thanksgiving day Style. Russ and I are celebrating our  “official” three year anniversary this weekend so I thought it would be fun to include him in this post. I mentioned it above but I am truly so grateful for all he does for me! Especially that he is not only my biggest supporter & blog photographer but that he is also willing to occasionally jump in the post and I even get great pictures out of it!

For Thanksgiving, we put together a pretty simple look. Mine is just a sweater and my favorite blanket scarf. This is the perfect casual thanksgiving look yet it is so cute and leaves wiggle room for that extra piece of pie ;). R’s look is a simple grey button down and his “dressier” pea coat. It helped to “warm up” his button down and “dressed” it up a bit. Between the jacket and his boot, this look is perfect for the cool Thanksgiving day weather.

I hope you all have the best Thanksgivings! I would love to hear what you all are thankful for right now 🙂

P.S. I will be back tomorrow with a ton of Black Friday specials so be sure to check back!

Best at Home Teeth Whitening Kits for sensitive teeth - Review

Best at home teeth whitening kit for sensitive teeth

Let’s talk insecurities! Everyone has them, some more than others. Starting a blog, especially with these insecurities was scary. For me, there are two main ones. Let me start this by saying to most of my friends and family, these two things are very minimal but to me, they have always been a big deal.

A couple of weekends ago, Russ and I took a super fun weekend trip up to Kansas City. A lot of people asked us “Why KC”. When I lived in Kansas we visited KC all of the time! I loved everything about it. As I got older, the desire to be there and explore only grew. Kansas City is now a big city that still feels small. There are so many sights, sounds, shops, and eats in Kansas City. Its so hard to do a trip in just a couple of days but it was plenty of time to fall in love with the city and a few of the places there. Russ and I have narrowed it down to our top picks in this fun weekend getaway guide to Kansas City.

Local Eats

img_3348

There is a large restaurant scene in Kansas City, and it can be difficult to keep track of all of the recommendation and restaurants you pass by.

For KC BBQ you have to try Q39. This is an amazing BBQ restaurant with so many great options that you won’t find at your typical bbq places. We suggest starting off with the onion strings. They are thin, crispy, spicy, and delicious. The plate is piled high and it comes with an amazing dipping sauce. The main courses were even tastier. Our awesome bartender talked me into their Burnt Ends sandwich and it was to die for. Russell had a sandwich with three different means and he loved it. This was such a fun and trendy BBQ place, we can’t wait to go back!

For great pizza try Chiusano’s Brick Oven Pizzeria at Legends Outlet Mall. The Pizza is amazing, the atmosphere is cute and quaint, and the price is just right. Russell and I split the best brick oven pizza we have ever had. It is the perfect opportunity to eat Italian food in Kansas City.

Mexican food restaurants are easy to find in KC. There are so many options it made it hard to chose. We ended up going with a favorite that we don’t get all that often, Chuys. If you don’t have a Chuys close you have to go.The food is great, the staff was so nice, and the atmosphere was, even more, fun the ones in Oklahoma and Texas.

Fun & Drinks

Power and Lights District has so many fun bars and restaurants. Perfect place to hop from place to place or go for just a couple of drinks. We loved this area and can’t wait to go back! Each place has its own personality and many were fun even during the day on Sunday.

Houlihan’s is one of my families favorite places to get drinks, especially during their drink specials on Sundays. It was a great place for us to watch the football games, get a small bite to eat, and have a few of their tasty drinks. The location right next to Oak Park Mall in Overland Park had an amazing patio and so many TVs. Definitely a great place for day drinks.

KC Soda Co was such a fun place to spend a little time on Sunday. It is at the Legends Outlet Mall and offers thousands of unique Sodas. We had so much fun testing out different sodas and finding our favorite flavors.

Shopping

Shopping in Kansas City was so fun! There are a couple of places I really recommend if you are going to Kansas City to shop.

Oak Park Mall is a large mall, especially compared to the malls in Oklahoma City. There are great stores like Evereve, Nordstrom, H&M, and so much more! We could have spent days exploring all of the stores and styles they offered.

The Plaza – The outdoor mall at the plaza was so fun. There are a ton of good shopping options, many of which are different than options we have at home. The Kate Spade store, of course, drew me in. It was so cute and the employees were amazing. We loved all of the fun restaurants, the great little coffee, and sweet shops, and of course, the people watching.

Legends Outlet Mall is another great place to go shopping. It is best to go early in the morning because by the afternoon it was really crowded. They had most of the traditional outlet shops with an added few we don’t have close. I loved the Victoria Secret Outlet and went crazy in Levi. This is the perfect place to spend your Sunday morning or late afternoon on your tip. Did I mention the area itself is so fun? The racetrack, soccer field, and new water park (that is still under construction) are all within walking distance.

Live Music

temporary-14temporary-16

KC Live in the Power and Lights district looked like one of the most fun places. There were tons of bars all in one area as well as an outdoor stage that plays tons of great bands. We missed the bands but the area looked like a total blast and we can’t wait to go next time we are there. I will say that during the day they played a movie over the stage outside. It looked like the perfect place to brunch and hang out during the day.

The Plaza district also has live music on some Saturday nights, it has food trucks, and it is such a fun outdoor atmosphere. We had so much fun exploring the area, hearing a little music, and grabbing some yummy snacks before dinner.

Where to Stay

There are so many great hotels depending on what you are wanting to do in Kansas City. We chose to stay in Olathe just outside of Kansas City. We found it to be the perfect location for us. It was a little cheaper than staying in downtown KC. It also was right off the high which made it easy to get any place we wanted to go quickly and with minimal traffic. I would suggest staying closer to downtown or the power and lights district if you are wanting to really experience the nightlife.

Thank you all so much for your recommendation a couple of weeks ago and for reading this post. We are hoping to do more weekend getaway to keep creating these fun guides for you all if you like them. Trips like these can be so fun without costing a ton. Have you been to KC? What should I add to this list?

FAQs

Click here for all outfit details!

Hi Everyone! On Instagram Stories yesterday I asked you all, what you wanted to see more of on The Finishing Touch. I had a wonderful outpouring of suggestions and recommendations and am going to work on implementing them. One of the tops was a FAQ post.

I really want to be open and honest with you all. This is one of my favorite spaces on the internet and I want it to be yours too. With that being said, I will work on letting you  into my personal life a little more but I would also love to get to know you all! I would love for you to email me (thefinishingtouchok@gmail.com) a little about you and what you want to see here. In the meantime, I have taken the top 10 questions I am asked and answered below. Let me know if there’s something I am missing and I would be happy to add it or answer for you!

How did you get into blogging/ Why “The Finishing Touch”?

Fun Fact: I am a Stella and Dot stylist and have been since September of 2016. I originally created The Finishing Touch – OKC on Intagram as a creative outlet and a way to share my #stelladotstyle. After a month or so, I realized that I was sharing more outfit post than I was jewelry and accessories and I wanted to do more. After a lot of thinking, I finally told Russell I wanted to start a Blog. He was fully onboard and even offered to start taking my pictures (needless to say he got good at Iphone 7s in the beginning). A few weeks later, I started working on my WordPress.com site. I was on the computer day and night (well – before and after work) creating and designing my website. There were tons of changes daily to my theme, the header, and everything in between.  Finally on February 27th of 2017, Russell finally talked me into publishing The Finishing Touch an Oklahoma City life and style blog.

The name goes back to my original Stella & Dot Instagram. When I was thinking about names I really wanted something that reminded me of Jewelry and my initial mission which was sharing Stella & Dot. I always thought of accessories as “finishing touches” to your outfit and the name kind of stuck. Since then, I have considered changing my name but so far I have not thought up anything I was in LOVE with.

Do you have any advice on getting accepted into Reward Style?

This is a question I get all of the time. Truthfully, I am no expert on reward style or blogging and I can’t be sure exactly why I got accepted but my biggest advice is this… Stay engaged. For two months leading up to finally applying for Reward Style I posted every week day at the same time of day and worked to tag all of my photos with what products I was wearing. I actively commented and engaged with fellow bloggers and even my followers. Finally, I tried to make sure all of my photos were edited the same and had a consistent flow. I am not one of those bloggers that has an amazing color scheme that just mesmerizes you, but I did try to keep my outfits bright and simple which attracted a lot of my followers in the first place. For those of you still trying to apply to LIKETOKNOW.it  GOOD LUCK – you’ve got this. If you have any other questions I would be happy to do my best to answer them.

What sizes do you typically wear/ how tall are you?

I am a 5’6.

I am a 34D to a 34DD so I typically size up in dress and tops to a medium. If I am wearing a small I will be sure to mention it in the post. I have a bigger back side 😉 so I really try to find higher waisted jeans but depending on the brand I wear between a 26 and a 27 in jeans and jean shorts. I am almost always ordering mediums in rompers, sweatpants, and any shorts that are sized like that.

Who is Russ/Russell?

Y’all don’t get me started on Russell. He is not only the best man I have ever met but I have been lucky enough to have known him since middle school and to call him mine for the last 2 ½ years. He is totally my rock, my best friend, my adventure buddy, and as of late he has been the one to make my little corner of the internet possible.

Who takes your photos?

I have a few different people I work with to take my photos. Who take them usually depends on the look, the week, and the vibe I am going for. I have a great friend Meredith Croak who has been taking my photos once or twice a month for the last few months. You can find her website here. I also have a couple of great blogger friends I occasionally meet up with to take pictures as well – Courtney from Life of a Medschool Wife and Abi from Abigail Say. I also am super lucky because Russell has played a huge role in taking my photos and that role is constantly growing with the new camera and equipment.

What app do you use to edit your pictures on your IPhone?

I try not to edit my photos too much but I do use a couple of apps. I have the full package on Rookie Cam – I love it. This app is great because it will allow you to adjust the brightness and contrast without turning your photos a weird color like the IPhone camera does. I also tend to use the “Bluebell” filter in the Vivid Focus package. It is a fairly bright filter with a blue tent that can be adjusted. It also has a blurring effect that can be adjusted which helps give your photos that expensive camera lenses “glow’.  I also use the app ColorStory occasionally. There are a ton of great filters to brighten your photos or give it a warm glow. The great thing about this app is the free version has a ton of amazing filters!

Is that your natural color or do you use a go tanning/ use self-tanner?

I was honestly surprised by how often I get this question. I am definitely lucky because I was blessed with Olive skin. I do not go tanning nor do I use self-tanner (not that I am opposed to it – if you have a good self-tanner please comment below – winters are not my friend). Like my dad, I tend to tan very easy and most summers I am darker than I am now. I also have a pretty even completion so I tend to only use tinted moisturizer with SPF in the summer rather than my usual makeup base.

What is the pink lip color you always wear?

I love love pink lipsticks but I also wear a lot of Nude, especially in the office. I like that a good pink lip not only adds little color but also make your teeth look 10X whiter which is great in pictures (haha). I go back and forth between drugstore lipsticks and nicer brands like Clinique and Mac.

The bright pink I wear is “flat out fabulous” by Mac. I also wear a lighter pink called “fire and ice” and it is my first lip sense! As far as drugstore brands go I use a couple of different ones. The first is NYX Matte Lipstick in “Shocking Pink” and Wet n Wild’s MegaLast lip color in Smokin’ Hot Pink or a gorgeous nude called “Bare it All

What store/s do you shop at the most?

Unfortunately, we do not have a Nordstrom’s in Oklahoma (yet – I am convinced we will get one) so I do most of my shopping from there online. I also love Dillard’s, Francesca’s, various boutiques around the city, Loft, and of course I am a loyal DSW customer. I am constantly mixing cheaper clothing (TJ Maxx / Target) with more expensive clothing from Dillard’s & Nordstrom’s. The majority of my work wear does come from Loft so I am constantly looking in their stores and on their websites for sales.

What are your favorite “reasonably priced” accessories brands?

I have heard from a lot of you that you would like to see more accessories, especially those that are reasonably priced or under $50! I totally hear ya! Accessories can completely transform you look but it’s so hard to spend a ton on an outfit then even more for the right accessories. I tend to go with these four stores when buying accessories:

Nordstrom – between their various partnerships they have a ton of vary reasonable priced jewelry, purses, and other accessories.

Stella & Dot – With new collections and pieces launching both quarterly and now monthly there is always something I need. Their signature engraveable necklaces have become a wardrobe staple. I throw mine on with everything. They also offer a ton of trendy pieces that are very versatile in every price point. One necklace can take you through the whole year by adding or removing a layer.

Charming Charlie – I have recently fallen in love with their on trend jewelry. They have several pairs of earrings and necklaces that are not only affordable but come in so many colors that you can always find one to match your outfit. I also love that they have perfect designer dupes when it comes to purses. This adds an extra element to your look without having to spend an outrageous amount of money.

Target – Y’all I love target. I am always finding perfect designer dupes on bags here. They also have a great selection of jewelry, and they have even stepped it up a notch with their SugarFix collection. I have been living in a few different pairs of their tassel earrings and I was shocked at how well they are holding up.

A few other places I shop for bags, jewelry, shoes, and other accessories are Dillards, Forever 21, & Francesca’s.

Outfit Diaries: Cancun, Mexico

Happy Friday & Memorial Weekend!!! Who else is ready for pools to be open and summer to start?

Sorry I have been MIA the past couple of weeks, I have been so busy with work and vacation. If you follow me on Instagram then you know I was in Cancun, Mexico  with my family and my boyfriend, Russell. It was so much fun!

Not only did we have  some of the best food including some of the best seafood I’ve ever eaten, but we also had a blast partaking in the activities and entertainment that resort offered. Sunday, the four of us were able to take a sail boat out to an island where we drank, ate, and snorkeled for the whole afternoon. Russell and I also had the opportunity to go scuba diving in a nearby reef. For those of you who don’t know, I am a certified diver, so I had so much fun getting to experience a new reef with Russell and see tons of sea turtles and other aquatic life. It was so great getting to recharge ourselves and celebrate my mom’s retirement.

Before I share my looks this past week, I wanted to share with you all a little about my home for the past week –  Palace Resorts. This is my 5th time staying in this particular Palace Resort and I still can’t get enough! Moon Palace Cancun is the perfect vacation. The resort itself is breathtaking. There are 4 Lobby options within the Moon Palace Resort, each with its own set of perks. I am talking 2-3 pools per lobby each connected by bridges. They also offer a large with lots of activities. For those of you who prefer to stay in the resort, there are so many restaurant options and nightlife options available to you, including: a steakhouse, the best Italian food you will eat in the south, an amazing and authentic Mayan restaurant, a super fun “discotech”, and the best of bars and fruity drinks. If you are into exploring, this is also the place for you. You are not to far from the city so you are still able to partake in all that Cancun has to offer. My two favorite spots to eat in Cancun are Senior Frogs & Hacienda Sisal.(Sidenote: to experiance the best waves and the bluest water, I suggest going into the Moon Palace Resort’s – Beach Palace Cancun at least one time on your trip – it is included in your stay at Moon Palace!).There are also tons of fun bars and outdoor eats along the Cancun strip. This resort is truly the best of both worlds! Click here to see more pictures of the resort! (Note: All opinions are my own, this was not a sponsored trip or post 🙂 ).

Packing & shopping for this trip was so fun. Judging from most of my outfits I think it is safe to say I am a little tropical print/ bright color obsessed, but I couldn’t resist how perfect they all were for Mexico. All of these outfits are super affordable and perfect for the summer or any upcoming vacations. Most of the dresses also can be found in other colors :).
